Waiting for your next vacation, holiday or adventure abroad can sometimes be painstaking. The pressures of working 9 to 5, and simply waiting for your next break can be an agonising process. So how can you occupy yourself to take your mind off the wait, and enjoy your time at home to the max?

There are a few things you can do to help you while away your idle time, and speed up the waiting process until your next precious trip away.

If a staycation isn’t on your agenda any time soon, Feet Do Travel share things you can do while waiting to travel.

Take up Hiking or Trekking

When you think about hiking or trekking, do you just think it’s only about walking? While walking is obviously involved, you also need to consider the other main factor of these fantastic activities – the fact you are spending more time in nature, and breathing fresh air! It’s something that can be enjoyed either by ourselves, with friends or family, and is great for our physical and mental health. Hiking and trekking are far more than just walking, and can be a soul cleansing activity for everyone. Starting small and building to longer walks is what makes this activity so accessible.

There is nothing quite like hiking through forest trails, or trekking up hills and mountains to experience the best of what nature has to offer, while taking in some beautiful scenery. Although not everyone has hiking trails right on their doorstep, you will find there will probably be available routes near to where you live. A quick internet search for hiking or trekking in your area will yield some surprising results!

You don’t need a lot of equipment to go hiking or trekking, but a few things are essential:
  • Good sturdy shoes or boots
  • Good breathable socks (bamboo fibre socks are excellent!)
  • Jacket/coat
  • Backpack
  • Water bottle
  • Snacks
  • Mobile phone

Once you have these essentials, you can start looking for trails and planning your next hike. With any activity that involves moderate exercise, you do need to be careful, especially if you have any pre-existing medical conditions. If you do have any health issues,  please check with a doctor before engaging in any activities, especially if you have any cardio-vascular concerns, or conditions like Diabetes as diabetic foot care needs to be carefully considered for these walking adventures. Lastly, always remember to tell someone where you are going if you are hiking solo, you never know what might happen and it is better to be safe than sorry.

Find yourself a new hobby

Nothing can help you fill your vacation waiting time like having a new, exciting hobby to focus on. The more active the hobby, the more beneficial it will be to you. With the recent Olympic games in mind, there are some fantastic hobbies just waiting for you to try them.

A recent trend we have seen is a rise in the popularity of Bouldering/Climbing, possibly due to its inclusion in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic games. This highly active sport is both physically and mentally challenging as you try to find the best and safest route up and over indoor and outdoor walls, rocks and cliff faces. The easiest way to sample this new sport would be to internet search for local indoor climbing walls or clubs and contact them for more information. Joining a club may also lead to more exciting travel opportunities for you!

Another sport with an increase in participants is Archery/Crossbow, of which I am a fan. Shooting targets gives me a sense of achievement, and I pride myself on my aim and accuracy. Most areas now have indoor and outdoor archery clubs, so doing a quick internet or social media search and contacting a local club for information would be my first port or call.

Archery/Crossbow is a sport where eventually, you might want to invest in your own equipment. While being a member of a club might also lead to further travel adventures for you, caring for your own equipment will quickly become a priority, so click here for more information, help and advice on the right type of protection for your chosen equipment.

Beautify your home

Being active is not for everyone, and maybe you aren’t looking for a new hobby whilst you wait for your next trip away. But what about home improvements to give yourself a more continental feel? A few simple changes to your home will add to your comfort whilst you wait to visit foreign lands.

There are several ways you can add to your home collection, but we personally feel our outdoor space is the most important area for transporting our minds to a faraway place. If you feel the same, then try checking Sunpan. They have some beautiful, unique design ideas for your outdoor living area which will make you feel you are abroad in no time, and make your holiday waiting duration far more pleasant.

Maybe updating your home isn’t what you need, and you are already thinking about moving home entirely to live your dream of becoming an ex-pat in another Country. Listed as one of the most stressful things you can do in your life, anything to make this process easier would be manna from heaven. There are lots of companies that can make your move simple and less stressful, so learn more about what these businesses can do for you.

Hopefully you now have some added inspiration for activities, or for adding more culture to your own home. Start making your wander lusting time fly by today!
