Going abroad can broaden your mind and teach you all about a new culture and people. However, it can also be incredibly expensive to do. Sometimes we can have just as good a holiday somewhere closer to home. Here are some of Feet Do Travel’s top tips for enjoying a staycation in your home country.

Driving yourself on a staycation gives greater flexibility ... and you can have so much fun on a road trip!
Drive

If you decide to stay in your home country, you should think about driving to your destination if you have your own car. This gives you far more flexibility compared to if you were to fly or take the train. For one, you aren’t constrained by timetables unless you take a ferry to an island. Instead, you can focus on the journey you are on, and who doesn't love a road trip? If you like the look of somewhere, you can spend a little longer exploring instead of jumping to catch public transport.

Are you taking a friend along for the journey? It might be handy to find a second driver. By taking a look for very cheap car insurance, you might be able to find a policy that will keep you covered without breaking the bank. By investing in a very cheap car insurance policy, you will know that your car is protected and you can occasionally sit back and relax in the passenger’s seat.

Choose somewhere different to stay, such as a river boat or castle
Stay Somewhere Different

Why go on a staycation and just rent a hotel room or an ordinary self-catering cottage? While there are some great places to stay out there, you should make sure that a staycation is extra special. Why not try to find a place to stay that is particularly unusual? It might be a great way for you to build a staycation!

For example, why don’t you book a room in a genuine castle? Many old castles have apartments you can rent out to visitors. You could also choose a riverboat, or perhaps a windmill or a converted train carriage? Have a look to see what you can find out there!

Push Yourself

Even if you are going somewhere new, people can sometimes slip into something familiar if they are in the same country. Why eat at a restaurant you can go to at home when there are new places to explore?

By pushing yourself out of your comfort zone, you might be surprised at some of the things you discover you like. Holidays are the perfect chances to try new foods and activities. You could find a lifelong passion for something and all you need to do is push your boundaries a little bit. Try something new next time you head away.

Though everyone should travel abroad, a staycation is also a great way to see more of your home country. Never be afraid to stay at home and see what you could find just a few hours away from where you live. You could end up in an area that you completely fall in love with and return to many times in your life.
