Off the Wall Street Art in Cebu: Unusual Expressions of Art in the Philippines

How would you describe Street Art? Is it graffiti on a train, spray painting on the side of a building, maybe a wall mural.

What is YOUR definition of Street Art?

I believe street art to be any form of expression in a public place, but it’s only living in Moalboal, Cebu, Philippines that made me question my view of street art.

Outside of Manilla, Street Art per se doesn’t appear to exist in the Philippines. Manilla has the Filipino Street Art Project, a paradise for art lovers, and renowned Filipino street artists have filled the City with colour.

As a mural art lover and no street art in Moalboal, how was I to get my “fix”? When asking myself this question, a colourfully painted Jeepney drove past me, and suddenly I found my street art!

Jeepneys are a cheap form of public transport in the Philippines, and no two are the same – what an original way for me to search for street art in Moalboal and Cebu!

Feet Do Travel show you off the wall street art in Cebu, unique expressions of art in the Philippines.

Street Art in Singapore? Really?

Singapore may not be the first City you think of when looking for wall murals and insta-worthy photographs, but it does have a thriving street art scene. You just need to know where to look for it.

This concrete jungle isn’t just filled with skyscrapers and in the past few years, many pieces have been commissioned proving that Singapore isn’t averse to street art, despite the City’s strict laws.

Looking for street art took us all over Singapore, from back streets to food courts, and we were surprised at the beauty we found.

After scouring the streets and alleys, Feet Do Travel share what we feel is some of the best street art in Singapore.

Searching for Street Art in Canggu, Bali

Searching for Street Art in Canggu, Kuta, Seminyak, Bali, Indonesia. Art or graffiti. Feet Do Travel
Once I discovered that Canggu, Bali had street art, I knew I would enjoy it here. Canggu is an up-and-coming surf spot just up the west coast from the ever popular Seminyak and Kuta, on the Indonesian island of Bali. It’s a hip place for many, but for me, it was about looking for street art.

But is it street art or graffiti? There is a fine line and, whilst driving around from one day to the next, new murals would appear, and others would be painted over.

Admittedly some of the urban art and cool graffiti is obscure, but other street artists’ murals are stunning.

As usual with wall murals, I took a plethora of photos. I enjoyed the hours spent searching for street art in Canggu, so now I would like to show you how talented some of these street artists really are.

Penang’s Street Art is famous worldwide and, before we visited, I didn’t truly understand what made it so special.

On the day we arrived in George Town, the capital of the Malaysian island on Penang, our homestay handed us a map of the area. This map featured not just the infamous street art, but the locations of the wrought iron sculptures which are dotted all over town. Whilst wandering around the City, we started to spot some of them and ticked them off on our map … very quickly and unconsciously, we were hooked!

When we realised that we were actively seeking the next sculpture or piece of art on our map, it dawned on us how much we were enjoying this “art treasure hunt”.

But what is it about the street art that appealed to us, and draws in millions of other tourists, each year?

Painted Pianos – Graffiti or Art?

We used to live in Gloucester, the County capital of the Cotswolds which is an area considered to be quintessentially English.  One lunchtime, whilst enjoying a gingerbread latte at my favourite Coffee #1 hangout, all of a sudden I heard a piano playing on the high street. A piano? A real piano? Not a pack-up-and-go sythesizer but a REAL piano, how on earth did a busker transport a real piano??

But it wasn’t a busker, it was an ordinary passer-by who had stopped to play “The Entertainer” on a colourfully painted piano randomly stationed on the street. My curiosity got the better of me and I needed to have a closer look. Upon inspection a plaque invited me to “Tickle my ivories. Have a go at playing this piano decorated by students at Gloucestershire College”.
