Are you looking for a new hobby? Do you want the freedom to go wherever you like? Concerned about the new normal but want to travel more?

Sailing could be the hobby you have been waiting for! Learning to sail will open doors in ways you never dreamt, and give you the chance to see sights from a new perspective.

Feet Do Travel share 6 reasons why you should try sailing.

Is there anywhere more beautiful to enjoy a sunset than on the ocean?
1. Unique Views

Even if you know an area really well, experiencing it from the ocean opens up your view in a completely different way.

For lovers of sunrises and sunsets, every morning and evening you will have a chance to witness the unappalled beauty of the sky changing colour from the open seas.

2. Travel

Once you’ve learnt to sail, the world becomes your oyster and you have access to anywhere that will let you dock!

All the money, time and effort spent on learning to sail will become worthwhile when you realise that your new skill gives you far more freedom than you’ve ever had before. Unlike driving or catching a flight to your next destination (which can be costly and you are bound by certain restrictions), sailing wherever you want is free after the initial investment of buying a sailing boat!

3. Lifelong Leisure

Learning to sail means you have a hobby for life, and you are never too young or too old to start. Sailing can even be a family occasion giving you an excuse to get outdoors and spend time together.

4. Fulfilment

Mastering the art of sailing and battling the elements can be extremely satisfying. Constant variations in weather conditions means that no two days of sailing are the same.

On calm days, sailing can offer the respite and peace of mind away from the stresses of reality, whereas if you are seeking a challenge, windier days at sea can provide this. The lack of consistency in conditions and varying levels of difficulty when sailing is what makes it so addictive keeping sailors coming back for more.

5. Socialise

Committing yourself to a new sport can open up opportunities for meeting people with similar interests to you, and most docks and boat ports have sailing clubs. These clubs can provide ways of getting involved in competitions, but are also a way of making new friends and finding a new sailing companion.

6. Keep Fit

Just like any other sport, sailing is a good way to get in shape . Sailing differs from most other sports because it doesn’t actually feel like exercise! Usually, you only notice the extent to which you have been moving your body and working your muscles once you get home and chill on the couch.

Stretching your entire body after a day’s sailing is an excellent way of preventing aches and pains. It’s also important to look after your hands as they are the part of the body which receives the most contact when sailing - any of these options will keep your hands protected.

With so many reasons to give sailing a try, what are you waiting for? If you still feel hesitant about sailing, arrange a taster session at your local sailing club and get a feel for the sport. Alternatively, head out with someone you know who has been an avid sailor for years.

Sailing is one of the few sports which allows you to be get close to nature and enjoy the fresh air, so why not give it a try!
