Less than an hour flight from Miami, the Bahamas is a great vacation destination if you’re looking for a tropical spot close to home. It also has something for everyone, no matter what you’re interested in. But part of having the best vacation in the Bahamas is knowing ahead of time what you want to do and then planning your vacation accordingly. Below are some tips on where to stay, what to do, and what to eat so that you can get started planning your best vacation ever.

Where to Stay

With more than 700 islands making up the Bahamas, it can be difficult to figure out where to stay. But where you should stay all depends on what you want to do and what you’re looking for in a vacation.

The most popular places to stay are Nassau on New Providence or else Paradise Island, which is connected to Nassau. You’ll get a mixture of the city and the beach here, so there is plenty of nightlife, restaurants, resorts, shopping, casinos, museums, and activities. On Paradise Island you’ll find the Atlantic resort, which has just about everything you could ever want in a resort. If you want both a fun beach trip and nonstop entertainment, Nassau and Paradise Island are for you.

If you’re looking for an island that is slightly less busy but still full of restaurants and things to do, you’ll want to stay on one of the out islands like the Abacos, Andros, Cat Island, or the Exumas. The Abacos is popular with those who like sailing, golfing, and charming towns with plenty of restaurants and bars. Andros is a great option if you love water sports, hiking, and undisturbed nature. Cat Island is more suited for those who want a quiet vacation in nature, one that isn’t too adventurous. It also has beautiful pink sand beaches, if that’s your thing. And the Exumas are for those looking for an exotic, exclusive vacation fit for the stars. But if none of these islands sound right for you, there are still plenty of other options.

What to Do

As hinted at above, there’s a lot to do in the Bahamas. It’s a great place to indulge in water sports like kayaking, scuba diving, snorkeling, boating, swimming, fishing, water skiing, and surfing, among others. On land, there’s hiking, cycling, and golfing. But to really indulge in the more adventurous activities, you’ll want to plan a day trip to the out islands or else stay on one of the out islands.

As for nightlife, while you’ll certainly find bars and activities on the out islands, the main place to go for clubbing is Nassau and Paradise Island. But be aware: Some clubs enforce a strict dress code. So don’t assume that just because it’s a beach town you can wear flip flops or casual clothing. Some clubs to check out include Bambu, Xscape Lounge & Nightclub, and Aura Night Club. If you want to shop during the day, there are plenty of good places on Paradise Island like the Marina Village at Atlantis, the Paradise Shopping Plaza, and the Crystal Court Shops. In Nassau, head to the Harbour Bay Shopping Centre.

What to Eat

It should be no surprise that you’ll get great seafood in the Bahamas, and you really can’t go wrong with whatever you choose. Still, some of the local fare includes conch, grouper, crab, lobster, and snapper. The local cuisine also includes plenty of spice, and it’s fairly similar to the cuisine of the American South. Staples include grits, peas ‘n’ rice, chowders, baked macaroni and cheese, coleslaw, potato salad, and Johnny Cakes.

But where should you eat? If you want a nice meal, you can’t go wrong with Nobu, which serves local fare in addition to Asian fare. Other solid options include the Graycliff Hotel & Restaurant, Lukka Kairi Restaurant, Dune, and Mckenzie’s Fresh Fish & Conch. Then there’s Pirate Republic Brewing or The Bearded Clam Sports Bar & Restaurant for craft beer and pub food.
