It is hard to believe that travelling by plane was once an exclusive activity, and during the last few decades it has become commonplace. During that time there have been a lot of changes in air travel, and we will look at some significant ones in this blog.

Everyone wants to travel the world but not everyone loves the logistics behind travelling. Planning a holiday can be thrilling but once the destination is picked and the dates blocked, you’ve got to start looking at the hard stuff – like budgeting, choosing your airlines, maybe buying additional baggage, planning your itinerary, arranging transportation to and from the airport, researching things to do and places to eat, learning a foreign language and so on.
You may be juggling work, family, friends and life in general, when will you ever have the time to get to all of the above!? If you’re anything like me, you’ll probably feel like you need a mini holiday from your Holiday Planning after you’ve completed your Holiday To-Do list, and especially after you’ve done your Holiday Budgets.
I for one, hate counting pennies, and prefer to just have an idea of how much my entire trip would cost including airfare, accommodations (preferably with breakfast) and some activities in total instead of breaking it up according to cost per day. I am also the type of traveller who doesn’t want to spend too much time planning and researching; it is just better if it could all be taken care of by a trusted third-party.

What are the first things that come into your mind when you think of Rio de Janeiro?
The Girl From Ipanema?
Despite all of those marvellous thoughts that appeared in your mind, why is it that most of your friends are off travelling in Europe or Asia, and don’t give South America, let alone Rio de Janeiro, much attention?
It’s like the South America continent never qualifies for the World Cup of travel destinations, but Europe and Asia are always lifting the trophy. Ironic how Brazil have lifted the trophy more times than any other country in the world when it comes to the World Cup of football.
I went to Rio de Janeiro as a volunteer in July 2015 and volunteered with the Brazilian-based company Iko Poran. This experience allowed me to get a deeper cultural understanding of Rio de Janeiro and how “Cariocas” (a word used to call people from Rio de Janeiro) live because part of the program was that I met local Cariocas, and learned about Rio de Janeiro from their perspective and their personal accounts.
In the face of unpopularity as a travel destination, I will unveil four reasons, from my own perspective and from what I learned, why Rio de Janeiro should be the next winner in your World Cup of travel destinations.
‘Eventually, I think Chicago will be the most beautiful great city left in the world’ - Frank Lloyd Wright
Since the greater Chicago area is home to over 100 houses and other buildings of Frank Lloyd Wright’s own design, this comment could be viewed as more than a little self-serving. On the other hand, when it comes to city-scape, who would know better than America’s most storied master architect. More than a collection of impressive structures, America’s Second City has carved out a niche as one of the most iconic locations in the heartland. From music and cuisine to architecture and art, today’s Chicago is a midwest Mecca of culture, inexplicably perched on the soggy shores of Lake Michigan.
However, that isn’t all that comes to mind when someone mentions the Windy City. Also known colloquially as ‘The Dark City’, Chicago has historically been associated with grittier aspects such as pollution-causing industry, animal processing plants and poverty.
Inseparably linked to villainous icons like Al Copone and John Dillinger, Chicago has also developed a reputation as a dangerous hub of crime, both organized and sporadic. In lieu of trying to bury or ignore these sinister facets, proud natives seem gratified to have forged a great metropolis out of some murky material.
Rather than try and tease out the truth between these two contradictory Chicago narratives, I want to focus on a few points of light in this town that still holds onto its own darkness. In this cultural guide to Chicago, let’s bring the dark city to light by exploring the architecture, cuisine, music and fine arts.
