Renting a Car Vs Public Transport When Travelling

20/3/2026

When renting a car is better than using public transport when travelling, especially if you are neurodivergent or travelling with people who are autistic
Public transport is often the first option travellers consider. In many cities or Countries, it works well; subways, buses, and trains are easy to navigate, frequent, and usually connect the main attractions.

But public transport is not always ideal. Sometimes the best choice depends on geography or the needs of the people you’re travelling with. In Japan, for example, trains connect major cities efficiently, yet rural areas, coastal towns, or mountains often require a car. The same applies where distances are larger than they appear, or if you’re travelling with children, someone in a wheelchair, or a person who finds crowds and loud environments overwhelming.

Even in cities with reliable transport, travel days do not always go to plan. Waiting on platforms, juggling connections, or unexpected delays can quickly eat into your day. Renting a car can make a real difference. Not for every trip, but in the right situation, it can completely change how a place feels to explore. Instead of planning around timetables, you travel at your own pace and often discover places you might otherwise miss.

Public transport works well for short, simple journeys, but renting a car gives more flexibility when visiting several places in one day or sticking to your own schedule. In this guide, Feet Do Travel explains why renting a car is sometimes the better choice than using public transport.

When Your Schedule Actually Matters

There is a big difference between travelling with a relaxed, open itinerary and trying to fit several things into one day.

If you are moving between neighbourhoods, attending meetings, visiting attractions outside the centre, or travelling with limited time, relying on transport timetables can quickly become frustrating.

A rental car gives you control over your own schedule. You can leave when it suits you, adjust your route along the way, and stop somewhere unexpected if it catches your eye.

That freedom often turns a rushed day into a smoother one.

It is something many travellers notice in cities where distances are larger than they appear on the map. Places such as Dubai, South Africa, Los Angeles, or even parts of Australia, public transport does not always connect everything easily.
Renting a car gives you freedom to travel how you want at your own pace, and it makes travel with a wheelchair more comfortable
The Freedom to Explore Beyond the Obvious

Public transport is excellent for well-known routes. Airports, central districts, and major attractions are usually well connected.

But travel becomes more interesting once you move beyond those places.

When you have your own vehicle, a destination opens up in a different, unforeseen way. Scenic routes, small towns, beaches outside the usual tourist areas, or local cafés that never appear in guidebooks suddenly become easier to reach.

This is often where the most memorable travel moments happen. One of my favourite memories from the year I lived in Australia was hiring a car and driving out of Melbourne into Ned Kelly country. After months of relying on public transport, that single day on the road felt incredibly freeing, simply driving along at my own pace, window down and wind in my hair, that travel experience is one I will never forget.

Hiring a car also removes the pressure of rushing back to catch the last bus or train in the evening, something many travellers have experienced at least once.

Comfort Makes a Difference on Longer Days

Comfort might sound like a small detail, but it can make a real difference to how enjoyable a travel day feels. For many travellers, a road trip is a bucket-list experience — think driving along U.S. Route 66 in a convertible or with the windows down, music playing, and the journey becoming part of the adventure. Even Spotify has playlists designed specifically for road trips, created with long hours on the road in mind. For those looking for a premium experience in cities like Dubai, services such as Trinity Rental make it easy to hire luxury cars and enjoy the trip in style and comfort.

After several hours of exploring in the heat, carrying bags, or moving between locations, having your own space to sit, recharge, and travel at your own pace can be surprisingly valuable.

It can also make travel more comfortable for people with different needs. For example, some neurodivergent travellers, including autistic people, find busy stations, crowds, or loud transport environments overwhelming. Travellers who are disabled or use a wheelchair may also find that hiring a car provides more control, easier movement between places, and less stress when navigating unfamiliar transport systems. If you are travelling with someone who has accessibility needs, this can make a big difference to the overall experience.

A few situations where travellers often prefer renting a car include:
  • Travelling with family or children
  • Carrying luggage between destinations
  • Visiting several locations in one day
  • Exploring areas outside city centres
  • Road trips where the journey itself is part of the experience
  • Travelling with accessibility or sensory considerations
  • Friends travelling together for convenience and to save money

It is less about luxury and more about convenience. Sometimes, the ability to travel without crowds or multiple transfers simply makes a trip easier — and far more enjoyable.
Renting a car as a group can make travelling and exploring a lot cheaper, and it's more convenient
It Is Not Always More Expensive

At first glance, public transport usually appears cheaper. A single ticket or daily pass seems like the obvious budget-friendly option.

But the real cost of getting around is not always so simple.

Multiple taxi rides, ride-sharing apps, missed connections, or longer travel and waiting times can add up quickly. When a group is travelling together, splitting the cost of a rental car can sometimes work out similar to (or even cheaper) than other options.

There is also the value of time.

If renting a car allows you to visit more places in a day, avoid long transfers, or reach destinations that would otherwise require tours or taxis, the overall experience can feel more worthwhile.

Many travellers only realise this after comparing both options during a trip.
Using public transport like the Shinkansen in Japan is still the best choice, and any country that has excellent transport system
When Public Transport is Still the Best Choice

Of course, renting a car is not always the right decision.

In cities with excellent transport systems, such as Tokyo, London, or Singapore, driving can actually be slower and more stressful. Parking, traffic, and navigation may outweigh the benefits.

Public transport is often best when:
  • You are mostly travelling around a city centre
  • Traffic congestion is heavy
  • Parking is limited or expensive
  • The transport system is reliable and extensive

In these places, trains and metros remain the easiest way to get around.

Travel is rarely one-size-fits-all.
Renting a luxury car can be part of your travel plan, or any rental car can be simply be the best practical option
A Practical Option for Certain Trips

The choice to rent a car really shines when flexibility matters.

Short trips with packed schedules, destinations spread across large areas, family holidays, or journeys where comfort and convenience play a bigger role all tend to benefit from having your own transport.

For many travellers, it simply removes friction, and you don’t need to hire a car for the entire trip, even just one day can give you the freedom you need.

In the end, it is not about choosing one option over the other every time, it is about recognising that in some destinations and situations, renting a car can make travel easier, more flexible, and sometimes far more enjoyable.

And occasionally, that small decision changes the entire pace of a trip.
