Malta is a beautiful country attracting tourists all year round, thanks to its warm climate and wide variety of things to do. It may be a small island, but it boasts a rich cultural heritage, fascinating history, and a vibrant food scene. Whether you’re wandering through ancient stone cities or enjoying freshly prepared seafood beside the sparkling Mediterranean Sea, there’s something here to capture every traveller’s heart.

For the more adventurous, Malta offers plenty of opportunities to stay active, from kayaking into sea caves, snorkelling in crystal-clear lagoons, to hiking along dramatic coastal paths and uncovering hidden coves tucked between golden cliffs. There’s a refreshing balance of culture, nature, and adventure making Malta an unforgettable destination.

There are various ways to experience Malta. You could unwind on a relaxing beach break, embark on a scenic walking holiday, or if you prefer to arrive by sea, you might include Malta in your cruise itinerary

Let Feet Do Travel take you on a closer look at three popular ways to enjoy a holiday in Malta.

Gozo is an ideal place to visit on a walking holiday to Malta
Walking Holiday in Malta

A great way to see Malta is by booking a walking holiday. If you enjoy active trips away and have visited any one of these walking holidays in Greece, or trekked a walking trail in England, Malta should be added to your hiking list. It offers a superb selection of scenic routes and exciting trails to explore. Whether you're rambling through the main island, discovering the natural beauty of Gozo (Malta’s peaceful sister island) or circling the coastline of tranquil Comino, there’s a trail to suit every level of walker.

Take your time to uncover tucked-away chapels, dramatic cliffsides, and charming hamlets where time seems to stand still. Many of these places remain untouched by mass tourism, giving you an authentic glimpse into local life. With the scent of wild herbs on the breeze and the crunch of ancient stone underfoot, Malta becomes more than a destination — it becomes a journey through story and landscape. A walking holiday is the perfect way to get off the beaten track and discover many hidden gems.

You could choose to hike Calypso’s Isle, which is named after the mythical nymph said to have kept Odysseus under her spell. Alternatively, you can explore the historic Victoria Lines walk, sometimes dubbed Malta’s ‘Great Wall’. There are many benefits of a walking holiday, and it’s a fantastic way to soak up the island’s charm allowing you to experience far more than you would from behind a car window or bus seat.

Valletta is one of the Mediterranean's most beautiful ports
Cruise holiday in Malta

Cruising has gained popularity over the years, which has meant more cruise lines are building new ships and expanding the places they visit. To address cruising sustainability issues, Malta has become the first Mediterranean port to offer shore power.

Malta, with its strategic location and beautiful harbours, is a natural choice for many Mediterranean cruise routes. Valletta, which is Malta’s capital, is home to the main port, and is nothing short of spectacular. Arriving by ship, you’ll be greeted by sweeping views of fortresses, baroque architecture, and the glistening Grand Harbour. It’s one of the most memorable port entries in Europe.

Many ships stop here for the day, giving you the chance to explore without needing to commit to a full holiday. This way you get a taste of the country and can return at a later date for longer. You can spend your time strolling the cobbled streets of Valletta, enjoying a harbour cruise, or venturing further afield for a dip in the Blue Lagoon. For a longer break, you can begin your cruise in Malta and spend a few relaxing days discovering the island before setting sail.

Alternatively, end your cruise here and give yourself time to decompress — perhaps with a final meal by the sea or an overnight stay in a boutique hotel overlooking the marina.

Malta's Capital, Valletta, has many historical cobbled streets to wander
City holiday in Malta

City breaks will always be popular, as they’re easy to organise and rarely disappoint. In Malta, many visitors choose to stay in Valletta, the capital, for a few days, and it’s easy to see why.

Valletta is steeped in history, bursting with architectural beauty, and offers some of the best food and cultural experiences in the Mediterranean. Think vibrant markets, rooftop cafés, intriguing museums, and majestic cathedrals, all packed into a city you can easily explore on foot.

It’s also more affordable than many other European capitals, this means your holiday budget can stretch a little further — whether for a boutique hotel, a guided tour, or that extra slice of ricotta-stuffed cannoli.

Just a short journey from Valletta is St Julian’s, another popular base for travellers. Known for its lively atmosphere, scenic promenade and wide range of bars and restaurants, it’s a great choice for those who enjoy a bit more buzz during their city break.

If you have time, we highly recommend taking a day trip to Gozo. With its rural charm, panoramic coastal paths and sleepy villages, Gozo offers a completely different pace of life. It’s a breath of fresh air, and an easy ferry ride makes it an ideal side trip from the mainland.

Malta is a destination we’re sure you’ll fall in love with — and quite possibly return to again and again. The mix of cultural depth, warm hospitality and varied landscapes means every visit offers something new to discover.

If we have piqued your interest with a trip to Malta, you can combine a trip with other neighbouring Countries. Hiking the Camino de Santiago from either Spain, Portugal or France is an excellent add-on, but also Italy has a few hikes if you’re planning to extend your walking holiday further!
